Jack Mason’s Ellum: A Nod to Classic Elegance and Swiss Precision

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

In the world of watches, certain watches not only tell time but tell stories, and Jack Mason’s Ellum is great example to this phrase. Designed to embody the spirit of the iconic 50s and 60s dress watches, the Ellum channels the suave elegance reminiscent of Don Draper, making it a quintessential accessory for any discerning gentleman. Coming in two colors, a gold dial with gold case or green dial with stainless steel case, I chose the green for it’s legibility and and unique hue of green.

Inspired by Mid-Century Elegance

The Ellum draws heavily on the aesthetic of mid-century dress watches, notable for their clean lines and understated elegance. It stands out with a mere 9mm in thickness, promoting not just style but comfort and subtlety under the cuff of a dress shirt. The watch’s linen dial, a beautiful throwback to the mid-century era, adds a unique texture that enriches its visual appeal. This woven linen texture features lines of various weights and depths, finished with a satin touch that catches the light just right.

Swiss Craftsmanship Meets American Precision

At the heart of the Ellum is the Sellita SW210, a Swiss manual wind movement known for its reliability and beauty. The movement is exquisitely finished, featuring blue screws and striped decoration, all visible through the sapphire caseback. This allows aficionados to appreciate the fine Swiss craftsmanship that goes into every detail. Assembled and regulated in the USA by Jack Mason, the Ellum maintains an accuracy of +/-5 seconds per day, showcasing the brand’s commitment to precision. My results were about -4 seconds a day, which is quite impressive.

Subtle Details That Count

The Ellum doesn’t just impress with its aesthetics and internal mechanics; attention to detail extends to every component. The curve-tipped hands sweep gracefully underneath the boxed sapphire crystal, a subtle design choice that adds depth and elegance to the overall dial design. The dial’s sapphire is slightly sloped, enhancing the dial’s depth and making the watch face appear more dynamic and intriguing. Jack Mason displays it’s Texas heritage on the seconds hand by adding the red, white and blue colors (not to be mistaken for the blue, white and red of the French flag).

Luxurious Materials

The strap of the Ellum is crafted from Italian Epsom calfskin leather, a material chosen for its durability and luxurious texture, similar to types used by high-end fashion houses like Hermès and Chanel. For added comfort, the back of the strap is lined with soft Alcantara leather, known for its plush feel and endurance. I really enjoy how this straps feels while wearing it. It has a buttery suede smoothness on the bottom.

Perfect Proportions

The Ellum is housed in a 38mm case and wears large due to it’s slim and minimal design. It’s an ideal size that ensures the watch is proportionally perfect for most wrist sizes. The large dial opening and thin bezel further enhance the watch’s elegant profile, making it a standout piece for both casual and formal occasions. You definitely want to pair this watch with a good suit, as the 9mm thickness fits comfortably under sleeves.
